The 3rd FGGCH took place in the Algarve from 27th April. Our base for the week was at the lovely Balaia Village Resort. The week started on the Sunday night where the 19 guests enjoyed a 3‐course meal with wine included, this gives the ladies and gentlemen a chance to meet each other in a friendly relaxed manner, this is also where the host, Sean Coyle, went through the week's itinerary, competitions, courses, start times, etc.
The 1st day was at one of the Algarve's Finest courses (host of Portuguese Open 8 times). The weather was perfect with not a cloud in sight, Outstanding holes, and the course was in fantastic condition The Men's winner with a 33 Points was John Robertson. The Ladies winner was Anne Seabrook with 29 Points.
Day 2 was at Vale do Lobo Ocean one of two courses at Vale do Lobo, this is the first time we have gone here with a Fairway GGH and we were not disappointed, The front 9 is quite a gentle affair but some of the holes on the back 9 take your breath away. Yet again the weather was perfect. The Men's winner with a very good score of 35 points was Steve Partington, the Ladies winner on a card playoff was Jan Lea.
Along with the individual on day 2 we have the Yellow ball team event, which is always a lot of fun, the winning team was John Robertson, Anne Seabrook, Patrick O'Neill, & Peter Ridding.
Wednesday is a rest day when the group can choose what they want to do whether its catching some sun, sightseeing, or play some more golf. Our base for the week Balaia Village have a beautiful 9 hole Par 3 course, every Wednesday they have The Gowie Cup, a Shot gun start event in the afternoon The weather was fantastic so a few of the group entered the event. They have a Visitor prize which was won by one of our guests Robin Seabrook.
The 3rd day we were back at the outstanding Vale do Lobo to play the Royal course, everyone of the guests said the course was fantastic weaving its way through trees, bunkers, and villas. The famous 16th, with cliff-top carryover - one of the most celebrated golf images in the world, which has become the veritable symbol of golf in the Algarve. The Men's winner with 34 points was Tony Fletcher, a great effort because Tony was quite poorly all week. The Ladies winner making it a double over the Vale do Lobo courses was Jan Lea. We had a mixed pairs event on day 3 also which was won by John Robertson & Colin Whiteside.
One of the original Championship courses and everyone's favourite course in the Algarve, in superb condition as always. Going into the final day John Robertson held a 7 shot lead from Steve Partington, and this was how it would finish Overall, John was very consistent all week and fully deserved his win. The Ladies event was very close going into the Final day between Anne Seabrook &Jan Lea with Anne winning the Overall by 3 shots, well done Anne. The Menís winner on the day with an excellent 34 points as Patrick O'Neill, the ladies winner making it a family double was Trish OíNeill. Final day we have longest drive, Menís winner was Patrick O'Neill and making it a great day for the O'Neills, Trish winning the Ladies. Nearest the pin on the final day was one by Peter Ridding & Anne Seabrook.
