Fairway Regular Trip: Algarve (March 2016)

Welcome to our latest Fairway Golf Group Competition taking place at the lovely beach location Dom Joao hotel in Alvor.

Day 1 at Silves started quite wet with the outlook not good for the day, but after a few holes the weather cleared up and back 9 was played in mostly sunshine but with a strong wind and this reflected in the scores. Both ladies &mens was a close affair with Edith Athey just edging out Kath Barnes on a card play off after both posted 29 points. Keith Edwards 30 points taking the spoils in the Men's by 1 shot from Newcomer Martin Almond.

On to Day 2 at one of the Guests favourite courses Gramacho, weather was much better with fine sunshine and a little breeze, but nothing like day 1, The course was in excellent condition, the women's and mens event was not a close affair on day 2 with Kath Barnes winning the day on 28 points. The Men's event saw the best score of the week from Bob Darlow with a very impressive 40 points on very fast greens, winning by 6 from Mike Trubshoe. Day 2 we also have the yellow ball team event which was won by Tony Fletcher, Graham Barnes, and yours truly on 89 points.

Wednesday is a rest day when the guests can top up their tan, do a bit of sightseeing or even play some extra golf.

Early start for the guests at Vale da Pinta on third day, the sun was shining but a little cold early on, then turned into a beautiful day with no wind. Birthday girl Sandra Smith 28 points & Tony Fletcher both just missing out to the in form players of the Week Kath Barnes &Bob Darlow on 29 points and 35 points respectively. Alongside the individual on Thursday we had a Ladies ∧ Mens pairs competition, Deirdre Darlow & Kath Barnes taking the ladies on 40 points, with Richard Smith & Bob Darlow winning the Men's on 42 points.

Final day of week was at the very impressive Palmares home to our first Fairway Golf Group Algarve Championship next month. The weather was outstanding on the day very warm with not a breath of wind, it really his a beautiful setting on a day like this looking out over the bay of Lagos. As often happens on the final day the week the scores can be a bit higher, plus Palmares is a championship course and never easy, that said someone forgot to tell Anne Seabrook who ran away with the ladies with an outstanding 32 points winning by 6 from Deirdre Darlow, Deirdre had the consolation of winning both the longest drive &Nearest the pin on the day. The Men's was quite one sided also with a very impressive 31 points from Graham Barnes taking the spoils by 5 shots from Mike Trubshoe, Graham also took the nearest the pin with longest drive going to Mike Trubshoe.

Saturday is a day of rest when the guests enjoy a spot of shopping or sunbathing, it was a beautiful sunny day, some go and get there hair ready for the gala dinner and presentation when all the guests look great. On to the presentation and our newcomer Martin Almond took away the shot of the week for a fine approach to the 13th on day 1 at Silves. The Ladies overall was one of the closest events we have seen, Player of the week Kath Barnes had a final day to forget at Palmares, leaving the door open to Anne Seabrook who's 32 points at Palmares pulled back 15 shots and win the Women's overall curiosity of last day counting, big well done to both Ladies. The Men's overall was not quite as close with Graham Barnes taking 2nd place with the overall going to 83 year old Bob Darlow on 124 points, winning by 9 shots, this is a fantastic achievement and once again shows age is no barrier in golf, if I am still playing at 83 I will be very happy, never mind winning. Big well done Bob
