Fairway Regular Trip: Algarve (November 2013)

The 1st FGGCH took place in the Algarve from 3rd Nov‐10th. Our base for the week was at the lovely Balaia Village Resort. The week starts on the Sunday Night with a Gala Dinner (3‐course meal) with drinks included, this gives the Ladies & Gentleman a chance to meet each other in a friendly relaxed manner, this is also where I go through the week's itinerary, Competitions, Courses, Start times, etc.

The 1st day was at the very impressive Oceanico Millenium. The morning started off a little cloudy but by early afternoon the sun came out and stayed out. The two 9s at Millenium are quite different the 1st carved out through the Pine Trees, the 2nd a little more open but more bunkers & water to deal with.

The Winning Score in the Ladies was 29 points from Trish O'Neill, and making it a family double in the Men's Was Patrick O'Neill with 37 points.

Monday Night most of the group went

If the 1st day was good the 2nd was outstanding. The venue for the day was Oceanico Victoria, Home of the Portugal Masters 2007‐2013 and it didn't disappoint. The layout and the condition of the course was first class, and with clear blue skys making it more special.

The Ladies Score was decided by a card play‐off with Anne Seabrook coming out on top with 24 points. The Men's was very close also with Peter Walsh edging it by 1 shot on 29 points. Alongside the Individual event on day 2, we had a Yellow Ball team event, which ended in a tie and again was won on a card playoff . The Winning team were Trish O'Neill, Tim Osman, Robin Seabrook, and Sean Coyle.

Tuesday Night the whole group went to Casa Velha a lovely restaurant only 5 mins from Balaia, and had a great night!

Wednesday is a rest day when the group can choose what they want to do whether its catching some sun, sightseeing, or play some more golf. Our base for the week Balaia Village have a beautiful 9‐hole Par 3 course, every Wednesday they have The Gowie Cup, a Shot gun start event in the afternoon. The weather was fantastic so a few of the group entered the event. They have a Visitor prize which was won by yours truly, Sean Coyle.

Wednesday Night we all decided to eat in the Hotel Restaurant, the owner had very kindly offered us any 3 courses from the menu for 14 euros any night of our stay.

Nearest the pin in the Gowrie Cup went to another member of our Group Robin Seabrook (pictured below).

On to the highly rated Laranjal, possibly the most picturesque course we played with fast, undulating greens in fantastic condition.

Day 3 is known for being moving day, and this certainly applied in the Men's event. The Ladies event was a close affair with Bev Davis coming out on top with 26 points. The Men's event was not close this time with Patrick O'Neill posting an outstanding 40 points to win the day by 10 shots.

Thursday Night, a few of the group headed for town for something to eat, and the rest took up the great offer in the Hotel.

Final day of the competition played at one of the oldest courses in the Algarve but what a gem. The course weaves it way through pine trees but each hole has a different layout. The weather was again stunning, in the Ladies event only 2 shots covered the Top 3 going into the final day and with them playing together anything was possible. Anne & Bev Davis had a great battle, but Anne just came out on top to win the day with 24 points and clinch the overall. The Men's was a little easier for Patrick O'Neill who led the by a quite a margin going into the back 9. A great back 9 from Tim Osman saw him win the day with a card playoff with Patrick O'Neill on 31 points, but Patrick held on to win the overall.

Also on the final day we have a Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin for Ladies & Gentleman. The Ladies longest drive went to Bev Davis, with Anne Seabrooke taking nearest the pin. Tim Osman took both the Longest Drive & Nearest the pin to make it a clean sweep on the final day.

Friday night, the whole group went into town to another great restaurant for a lovely meal and a few drinks!

After a very relaxing day had by all on to a 4‐course gala dinner (including champagne) presentation followed by entertainment.

We hope that you all enjoyed our fantastic November Algarve trip. The next Fairway Golf Group Holidays trip will be between the 16th and 23rd of March 2014, staying at the excellent beach front Dom Joao Pestana Hotel. The hotel is just five minutes away from the beautiful Alvor and is full of great restaurants and bars.
