Welcome to our 20th Anniversary Fairway Golf Group Holiday.
The 20th Anniversary Fairway Golf Group Holiday took place from 6‐13 November. Our base for the week was the Vila Gale Ampalius hotel in Vilamoura, lovely beach front hotel with a short walk to the famous marina. With this being the 20th Anniversary I had invited Mr Peter Walsh the host of the business for 17 years along to help us with the running of the week, with a group of 36 golfers and 3 non‐golfers it needed a second person. The Sunday night saw the guests gather in the bar for the traditional Welcome drinks, followed by a 3 course meal with all drinks included, this is where the host (Sean Coyle) can go through all the itinerary for the week.
Day 1 we woke up to lovely sunshine for our visit to Victoria Host of the Portugal Masters only 2 weeks earlier, the lovely weather continued throughout the day but there was a stiff breeze, which affected the scores. The lady’s individual was won by 1 shot on 31 points by Fairway newcomer Anne Clark the lowest handicapper on show, a fine score round arguably the most difficult course of the week. The men's event was won on a card play‐off by Mike Craddock also on 31 points, the host for the week unofficially won the day by 5, but can't win (good job he doubled the last or wouldn't have been let in clubhouse)
The fantastic weather continued for our day 2 visit to Quinta South one of the best courses in Europe and 8 times Portugal Open host. The wind had subsided also which reflected in a much better scoring day. Day 2 we include the famous Yellow ball team event, this was very close with Robin Seabrook, Frieda Wilkinson, Shiela Thompson & Mike Trubshoe winning the day.Taken the spoils for the ladies was runaway winner Shiela Thompson with a very impressive 35 points, John Robertson with a equally impressive 37 points taken the men's by 4 shots.
Wednesday is the rest day for our clients, but quite a few decided to play at different venues including Laranjal, Balaia Village, Salgados, Espiche & Alamos to name a few.
On to day 3 and the weather was getting better by the day, with clear blue sky's for our day at Millennium, one of the most underrated courses in the Algarve, a fine layout & possibly the best condition I have seen it, that said possibly the easiest course we played on the week. We also ran a Ladies & Mens Pairs at Millennium, the Ladies event going to Pat McAlhone & Yvonne smith on 43 points, with Steve Partington & Bob Boyle also on 43 points winning the Men's. The scores were very impressive for both Ladies & Mens. We had over 10 ladies over 30 points but no one could match best of the week Yvonne Smith 40 points. The Men's was a closer affair but Newcomer Bob Boyles fine 38 points taking the spoils.
Final day of the week saw another beautiful day (very lucky with weather) as we took on client’s favourite the Old Course, course was set up great as always, final day we have longest drive & nearest the pin for both Ladies & Men's. Longest drive for the Ladies was won by Frieda Wilkinson a fine effort that went passed the men's, Frieda also took the nearest the pin, making it a double. Men's longest drive went to Newcomer John Clark, with a great shot from playing partner Keith Edwards winning nearest the pin. Anna Clark with a fine 31 points took her second day win of the week, with Steve Partington on 37 points taken the men's by 2 shots.
Saturday is traditionally another rest day were some players decided to play at Parque da Floresta, most clients relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful weather, before getting ready for the Gala Presentaton. The Gala dinner was a lovely 3 course a la carte with drinks were the Vila Gale Staff really look after us. Alongside the winners of the days including pairs and teams, we had to announce the shot of the week, the weekly team event and both Ladies & Mens overall winners. The Shot of the week went to Keith Edwards who nearly holed out on his way to winning nearest the pin at Old Course. Team event which consisted of 2 scores from 4 on final 3 days went to Robin Seabrook, Stuart McCall, Mike Craddock & Bob Boyles. The ladies overall was quite close at the finish, 3rd was Yvonne Smith on 114 points, Anna Clark on 115 taken 2nd, but edging the out on 118 points was Shiela Thompson. The Men's event came down to the final couple of holes, John Roberston on 124 points 3rd, 2nd on 126 points was Bob Boyles, but picking up 7 shots on final day to win was Eric Smith on 127 points. A big well done to all the winners and hope to see you all in 2017, from me and my family have a great Xmas & new year.
